Hi Bridget - How's it going? Well, it's Monday, if that helps. Maybe it does, maybe not. Mondays in San Francisco in the summer always seem to be shrouded in a thick layer of fog. Inevitably it gives way to sunlight, which hopefully is a microcosm for the week as a whole, gradually improving after a slow start. Hey, now that I think of it, a great way to get this week off to a fast start would be to swing by Hotel Utah tonight for the good ol' open mic and have a great time with some of the best people I know.
One such person? Our feature for tonight, CHRIS HANSON. Oh, I'm looking forward to this, as should you. What you will hear is acoustic folk balladry at its finest. The guy's an award-winning songwriter (just ask the folks at West Coast Songwriters, who kept giving him a strange, nebulous award called "Best Song"... Yeah I don't know what it means either... Oh wait, an award for a really good song? Got it!). Each chorus is hummable, and the structures and chord progressions of his songs are what I'd call deceptively sophisticated. The tunes go down smooth, guided by Hanson's haunting, weathered yet strong baritone. Have a listen at http://theutah.org/artist/chrishanson.
Quick shout-out: One of the great things about The Utah is that you get a live recording of your performance. Another great thing is that often you have a chance to have your picture taken, while performing, by a highly accomplished music photographer! ASMP member Bridget Canfield, long our resident photographer, has done and continues to do amazing work in support of local artists of all shapes and sizes.
